Al Spx is Ladan Hussein, formerly known as Cold Specks. As Cold Specks, she released three critically
acclaimed albums with Mute Records and Arts & Crafts. Her debut album, I Predict A Graceful
Expulsion, was a monsoon of sound that rained expressiveness like a poet’s thought cloud. Genre
classifications are besides the point, Al Spx is a storyteller. Some people grow radically, hitting walls and
changing directions as they bounce through life, which Ladan certainly did on her path to making
music. After a forced sabbatical and a misdiagnosis of schizophrenia (Ladan is in fact bipolar), Al Spx
has reclaimed her creative autonomy. Her new, unreleased album ‘Light for the Midnight That Is Mine'
is a testament to her survival and indomitable spirit. It showcases the dynamics of Ladan’s voice,
unrelenting and understated, merging with a pop undercut that runs through the new work. It is
profoundly and emotionally honest, you feel the presence of vulnerability. The album will be released
towards the end of 2022 with Mute Records and is being produced by Adrian Utley of Portishead and
Ali Chant.
